Studio Enquiries on Instagram and WhatsApp in Nigeria
An artist watches your reel at 11:38pm. The vocal chain sounds right, the room looks right, and she has a song. She DMs “how much per hour?” and, because she is in a burst, she DMs two other studios the same thing. One of them replies at 11:40 with the rate, what is included, and a link to book Room A tomorrow with a deposit. The other two reply at 9am.
That is the whole acquisition funnel of a Nigerian studio, and it happens while the engineer is tracking someone else.
Where studio enquiries come from
- Instagram DMs and comments under session reels, before and after clips, and artists posting from your room. The dominant channel.
- TikTok for producers with a sound and younger artists.
- WhatsApp from a number in the bio, a referral, or an artist’s friend forwarding your rate card.
- StudioLib and SoundBetter for artists searching, and clients abroad for mixing.
- Calls during sessions, when nobody can pick up.
- Referrals: “my guy recorded his EP with you.”
All of them land on the engineer’s phone. All of them wait when the engineer is working, which is exactly when artists are enquiring.
The four questions every artist asks
- How much per hour? The rate, what it includes, the minimum, in one line.
- Engineer included, or do I bring mine? Say which, and the rate for each.
- Can I come tonight or tomorrow? A booking link with real slots, not “check availability”.
- Can I pay after? A deposit holds the slot, the balance is on the day. The link is in the reply.
From DM to paid slot, step by step
1. The instant reply
Within seconds of the DM, comment or message: the rates, what is included, the rooms, and the booking link. In your voice. At midnight.
2. The record
Name, number, what they make, which room they asked about, how they found you. From the first message.
3. The booking with money attached
She picks the room and the slot. The deposit request goes out in Naira. Paid, confirmed on the calendar. Unpaid after the time you set, the slot reopens and the follow-up continues.
4. The follow-up
If she reads and does not book, a sequence runs: a check-in, a clip of the room, the rate again, the link again. It stops the moment she replies or books.
5. The handover
When she wants to talk about the song, the conversation is assigned to the engineer or the manager, with everything she said in front of them.
Why studios lose here
Not because the reply is bad. Because it is late, and because the studio is busiest exactly when the most artists are enquiring. Every hour a DM waits at night, the chance the artist books somewhere else roughly doubles, because the burst does not last until morning. Fixing the reply speed is worth more than a new mic, because the reels are already producing DMs nobody answers.
How GrowUp Business does it
Instagram DMs, comments, WhatsApp messages and calls land in one inbox with their source. An instant reply goes out with your rates, what is included, and a booking link, in your words. The artist becomes a record. The slot books on the room’s calendar with a deposit request in Naira. If she does not book, follow-up runs until she does or opts out. Every conversation has one owner, and no room is double-booked. Naira pricing and Paystack, no per-conversation WhatsApp fees, up to 10 logins.
Once she is booked, the studio software page shows what happens from the session to the mix delivered when the balance lands. If the leak is artists who never come back, that is retention.
Common questions
Should a studio post its rates?
Post the rate with what it includes: 'N15,000 an hour with an engineer, two-hour minimum, deposit to hold the slot.' A post with no rate gets fifty 'how much?' DMs that nobody answers. A post with the rate gets DMs from artists who can afford it, and the DM can go straight to the booking link.
How fast should a studio reply?
Within a minute, because the artist is in a creative burst at 11:40pm and is messaging three studios. That is only possible with an instant automatic reply that gives the rates, what is included, and a booking link, sent while the engineer is tracking. The human reply follows, and the artist is already booked.
What do artists actually ask?
Four things. How much per hour. Is there an engineer or do I bring mine. Can I come tonight or tomorrow. Can I pay after. Answer all four in the first reply, in your voice, and the fourth one with a deposit link.
How do I handle 'can I pay after the session'?
With a deposit to hold the slot and the balance at the end. Not a lecture. 'A deposit of N X holds the slot, the balance is on the day.' Artists who are serious pay it. Artists who were never coming do not, and the slot stays open for someone who will.
What about comments on the reel?
A comment that says 'rate?' or 'address?' is an enquiry. It can trigger an automatic reply or a DM so the artist hears from you while the reel is still playing. Left until morning, she has booked down the road.
Can two people answer DMs without double-booking a room?
Yes, when every booking goes through the room's calendar and every conversation has one owner. The front desk and the engineer can both reply, and neither can put two artists in Room A at 10am.
